I don't know, I only have Win 7 machines, but since they are just connector cables, as long as your equipment has the right ports, it should work for you.

Does it compatible with win 8 and can be used for dumping hex codes in microcontrollers.??

It is compatible with Windows 8 and 8.1. There are 8 and 8 x64 specific drivers for it.  And it can be used for that purpose.  I use an Ultrabook for work and I usually use the adapter for Cisco console connections but I have used it for a variety of other purposes. Although, I would suggest using an adapter like the ATEN UC232A instead. It isn't build quite as flimsily and the driver tends to crash less in Windows 8. The StarTech adapter tends to stop responding on the USB COM port after half an hour or so or the driver will crash. That usually just means you have to unplug it and plug it back in but when my YOGA 2 still had the Lenovo shipped image on it instead of the Windows 8.1 install after I wiped it it occasionally would blue screen. Hope this helps.

I have an old Graphtec plotter that I am trying to connect to a pc of approximate age compatibility (windows 7).  The 40 pin parallel connecter cable to usb doesn't "appear" in the device menu of the software I am running. There are 25 pin and 9 pin ports on both.
I understand the cable comes with a driver disc ? I want to try whatever is best. What do you recommend?

You might be in luck since Graphtec seems to offer Windows 7 drivers. I wasn't able to get this cable to work with my old Okidata plotter printer. Nothing was ever recognized no matter what I did, but that was because Okidata did not offer any drivers for Win 7. I don't remember that the cable came with a CD, though. The cable is well made. Wish I could be more help.
